Leonard Darwin was born on 15 January 1850, fourth son of the naturalist Charles Darwin. He joined the Royal Engineers as a soldier in 1871 and became a Major in 1890, teaching at the School of Military Engineering at Chatham from 1877 to 1882. Lewis Anthony Beaumont was born on 19 May 1847. In 1860, he entered the Royal Navy and seven years later was promoted lieutenant, serving on the Australian Station from 1868 to 1871. After qualifying as gunnery lieutenant, he was appointed instructor during the torpedo experiments.
